Walking football is sweeping the nation, proving that the beautiful game has no expiration date. Leading this movement is the Thames Valley Walking Football League (TVWFL). Known for fostering inclusive, competitive, and highly rewarding football, the league is reaching a major milestone: launching a brand-new Women’s Over 50s (W50s) category for the upcoming season starting September 2026.
A Historic Milestone for Women’s Football
The introduction of the W50s category marks a natural progression for the TVWFL, building on the smashing success of its Over 40s division. For decades, opportunities for older female athletes to stay active in competitive sports were sparse. The TVWFL’s expansion reflects a vital shift in community sports, giving women over 50 a dedicated space to lace up their boots, reconnect with their love of football, and stay fit.
A Thrilling Debut: The July Summer Cup
To build momentum ahead of the official league launch, TVWFL hosted a special Summer Cup in July—the very first tournament dedicated exclusively to the new W50s category.
Designed carefully to prioritise participation, the cup followed a round-robin format with no knockout finals. This structure was a masterstroke, maximising actual game time on the pitch for every single player and giving each club equal opportunity to test their tactical depth.
The tournament featured seven eager teams:
- South Reading
- Bracknell
- Watford
- Woodley
- Maidenhead
- Woking
- Oxford
From the opening whistle, the competitive spirit was fierce yet incredibly friendly. Tension built at the top of the table as Bracknell and Watford went toe-to-toe in a standout match. The nail-biting showdown finished in a hard-fought 0-0 draw, demonstrating the impressive defensive grit and quality of both sides. When the points were tallied, Watford emerged as the inaugural Summer Cup champions!
More Than Just Silverware
While Watford lifted the trophy, the true triumph belonged to the movement itself. The July cup was far more than a pre-season warm-up; it was a celebration of community, health, and female athletic longevity. The atmosphere off the pitch matched the intensity on it, filled with shared camaraderie, roaring support from the sidelines, and genuine mutual respect among rivals.
As the TVWFL prepares to kick off the new season this September, the foundation could not be stronger. The stage is set for an unforgettable debut season, proving once again that age is just a number when there’s a ball at your feet.
